Private School Scholarship Tests

Source: ACER WEBSITE (Acer Scholarships Office)

https://scholarships.acer.edu.au/

The ACER Scholarship Tests consist of a series of academic ability tests used to select students for the award of a scholarship. Independent schools around Australia choose a testing date that best suits their needs.

The cooperative scholarship testing program is where your child sits an exam set by ACER for application to many schools and the results of your child’s test are shared between schools.

FAQs

Which schools offer scholarships and what are the test dates?

Please see these information at the end of this page.

When do applications close?

Cooperative program schools: applications will close at 11:30pm ACDT Thursday 21 January 2021 (ACEP SA schools only), 11pm AEDT (Qld schools) or midnight AEDT (NSW and Vic schools) on Monday 8 February 2021 and 9pm AWST Wednesday 24 February 2021 (WA schools). There will be NO late applications taken by ACER.

Alternative date program schools: closing dates will vary. You must check the school’s website or your online application for the individual closing dates. There will be NO late applications taken by ACER.

How much does it cost to apply?

Each school sets its own application fee. You must complete a separate application and pay a separate fee for each school that you apply to. Details are available on the schools’ websites.

How do I apply to sit the ACER Scholarship Test?

To apply for a test you need to create a Parent Account in the ACER Scholarship Test online application system and then complete an application for your child for each school you wish to apply to. Check the individual school websites before applying online. Some schools may require additional information or have extra forms to fill out. It is your responsibility to check whether you have met a school's requirements before making an application.

How do I find out about the results?

ACER will provide your results to the school/s you've applied to. For alternative date schools the individual schools decide if and how they release to parents their child's results report. Some schools will post the result reports to parents in the mail. Other schools have opted for parents to be able to access results online; in this case you will receive a notification email from ACER with information about how to access your report.

For cooperative schools, results will be available online in mid-March 2021 (SA only) or early April 2021 (Vic, NSW, Qld, WA). On the day results are available, you will be sent a notification email from ACER and you will able to access the results online in your Parent Account.

How do I find out whether my child has been offered a scholarship?

The school/s will contact parents of students they would like to offer a scholarship to. If you have not been contacted by the school/s, you can still access your child's results online as stated above.

Secondary level tests
(entry into Years 7 to 12)

There are a maximum of four separate sub-tests administered.

Test 1: Written Expression (extended response, 25 minutes)

Two topics for writing will be set to allow students to use different styles of writing. They are presented as two separate tests (one in Test 1 and one in Test 4). This test is concerned with the student’s ability to express thoughts and ideas in writing.

Test 2: Humanities – Comprehension and Interpretation (multiple choice, 40 minutes)

This test asks students to answer questions related to written and visual material. The material may be drawn from subject areas such as English, Art, History, Geography and Social Studies. No specialist knowledge in these areas is assumed – – all the information needed will be provided. Students are required to think critically and make judgements about different types of texts, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, cartoons, diagrams and maps.

Test 3: Mathematics (multiple choice, 40 minutes)

This test attempts to measure mathematical and scientific abilities rather than school achievement in these areas. The material used for the questions is selected from a wide variety of sources, and may differ from standard school-based curriculum materials.

Test 4: Written Expression (extended response, 25 minutes)

Two topics for writing will be set to allow students to use different styles of writing. They are presented as two separate tests (one in Test 1 and one in Test 4). This test is concerned with the student’s ability to express thoughts and ideas in writing.

The actual time at which the first test starts can be determined by the school. A break should be allowed between Tests 2 and 3.

Primary level tests
(entry into Years 4, 5 or 6)

Test 1: Reading and Viewing (multiple choice, 30 minutes)

The Reading and Viewing test provides a single measure of achievement reflecting comprehension and interpretation of written and visual material from a range of curriculum areas. Students read several short passages and answer 25 multiple-choice questions.

Test 2: Mathematics (multiple choice, 30 minutes)

Students apply mathematical skills and knowledge to answer problems, including short calculations in each of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). The test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions.

Test 3: Writing (2x extended response of 20 minutes each, 40 minutes total)

Students write two short pieces in response to two separate prompts and will be assessed in terms of:

  • the quality of content and ideas
  • the structure of expressions
